They’d been sitting across from Chad and his assistant for over an hour on the most uncomfortable white couch possibly ever made, and Cash still didn’t know why the guy was paid five hundred dollars an hour for his expertise. Oh sure, he was slick enough, the expensive suit and leather shoes that wouldn’t last a day out on a real ranch spoke of how successful he was. His hair had never been on this side of a ten dollar cut and his cologne had that expensive spicy scent that smelled like an afterthought, but Cash would bet his next PBR winnings that it wasn’t.

Chad hadn’t stopped talking since they’d walked into the room. Every few minutes he’d reference something on his tablet and show them spiked graphs and line bars that were supposed to be very important. All it said to Cash was that a lot of people needed a life.

“The #AskAvery hashtag has completely exploded,” Chad continued, using his fancy pen as a pointer to a specific spike in a line graph.

Cash wondered if Chad knew there was another use for his pen since there wasn’t a piece of paper in sight.

“There were some tweets about your hospital visit last night, which helped us a lot. Public opinion is swaying. I mean, there’s no other more sympathetic figure than a woman who might lose her unborn child. Am I right or am I right?”

Cash blinked, surprised that Chad had paused long enough to pretend that either of them had an opinion. He opened his mouth to respond and then realized he had nothing to say. Polls, trending, tweets and website hits were all somethings that “other” people cared about. Not him.

He looked over at Lauren to share an eye roll or a conspirator’s wink, but there was no humor in her face. Her gaze was fixed on Chad, her body leaning forward, her head nodding in understanding every few minutes.

It emphasized to him that she was one of those “other” people that cared about that “trending” stuff. Her “people” and his “people” never mixed. Maybe “them” breeding would end up with a DNA malfunction like a donkey or worse… a sheep-goat.

Well, at least his baby had a fighting chance, especially if it took after his Lauren. She was no one’s dummy.

His Lauren? Really? Maybe he’d always thought of her as his, but never had the guts to admit it, even to himself. Cash turned to look at her. Yeah, she was his. Even if she didn’t know it yet.

“You really expect me to believe…” She leaned back for the first time, allowing a moment of rest against the couch, but the tightness in her jaw didn’t go away, even when she spoke. Impressive that she could speak so clearly with lips so stiff. “That one circulating camera phone picture really could tank the whole campaign. That’s a little farfetched even for you, don’t you think?”

“One picture gets retweeted a thousand times, and then it's a thousand pictures. Especially in a trending hashtag.
